Kitchen Shelves come in all shapes and sizes (see types of wood), including but not limited to Fixed Shelves, Adjustable Shelves, Corner Shelves, Floating Shelves, Pull-out Shelves and Standalones. The size, shape and overall layout of your kitchen will determine which style will work best for your space.  This article will help determine just that and provide options for you to select and begin your project right away. 



Kitchen Shelves vs Cabinets 

Open concept shelves tend to be more visually appealing, not to mention convenient. No more opening and shutting multiple doors before finding what you’re looking for. Ultimately, though, it’s a personal preference. My kitchen has both kinds on opposite sides, almost like cabinets vs shelves. What works for me, though, may not work for you. You should determine the best approach according to the layout of your kitchen space and the feel you wish to achieve.     

Types of Kitchen Shelves

Fixed Shelves 

Fixed units cannot be moved once placed without having to undo the fastening process. This is never ideal as it can threaten the integrity of the associated structure.   This includes floating, standalone, or any shelf that is fastened down for permanent placement.    

Adjustable Shelves 

True to the name, adjustable units can be adjusted according to one’s needs at a particular time.  Adjustments can create more or less space between shelves as needed.  

Corner Shelves 

There are standalone corner units as well as those made to connect shelves on adjacent walls. 

Floating Shelves 

These units are said to “float” due to the fact they’re not supported by legs that touch the floor. Floating shelves are both aesthetically pleasing and good on space.  If those two factors are at the top of your priority list then floating shelves are definitely a great choice for you.      

Pull-out Shelves

Useful and beautiful, pull-out shelving units say a lot about not only your kitchen but YOU as well.  A nice pull-out system can effortlessly take your kitchen to the next level.  

Standalone Shelves 

These units are set directly onto the floor and can be moved as needed.  If you do decide to move your standalone shelf make sure to first remove everything from the racks so to avoid injury to yourself or damage to your kitchen.  They’re perfect for the placement of larger items and kitchen organization.
